The Background Check Process

Is my personal information secure?

How long does a background check take?

It depends on what’s being checked. Some results come back in a day or two. Others take longer because courts move slowly, records are hard to access, or jurisdictions have delays we can’t control. We push things along as quickly as possible, but accuracy always comes first.

What shows up on an employment background check?

That depends on what the employer orders and what’s legally allowed. Your report might include criminal records, past employment, education credentials, driving history, or other authorized searches. Not every check includes everything – it’s based on the role and the employer’s screening policy.

Does Universal Background Screening decide who gets hired?

No. We gather and report information. Employers make the hiring decisions based on their own policies and the law. We’re not in the room when those calls are made.

Drug Testing and Health Screening

How long do drug test results take?

Negative results usually come back within three to five business days. Positive results take longer (up to two weeks) because they need confirmation testing and review by a Medical Review Officer (MRO). If you have a valid prescription, the MRO verifies that before finalizing the report.

What should I bring to a drug test or health screening?

A government-issued photo ID and your donor pass, which you’ll receive electronically. Show up on time (or a little early), and you’ll be in and out.

What if I take prescription medication?

If something you’re prescribed shows up on the test, the MRO will contact you to verify it. Once confirmed, your results are updated accordingly. It’s a standard part of the process.

Preparing for Your Background Check

What information should I have ready?

Make sure everything you submit (names, addresses, dates, social security number) is accurate and complete. Small errors can cause big delays, so double-check before you hit submit.

I didn’t get my scheduling or invitation email. What now?

Check your spam or junk folder first. Still nothing? Contact the company that’s hiring you; they can resend it or help troubleshoot.

After the Screening

Where can I check my background check status?

Log into the Universal Background Screening candidate portal. You’ll see updates there as things move along.

How do employers use background check information?

That’s up to them. We provide the information; they decide how it factors into their hiring process. Different companies have different policies, and all of them have to follow applicable employment laws.

Errors, Disputes, and Your Rights

What if my background check has incorrect information?

You have the right to dispute it. Common issues include wrong details, records that belong to someone else, or outdated case information. If something doesn’t look right, speak up.

What happens after I file a dispute?

We investigate. Under the FCRA, we have a set timeframe to review the disputed information, verify it with the source, and get back to you. If we find an error, we’ll update your report and let you know.

What if I’m a victim of identity theft or trafficking?
