Creating columns of text before the arrival of the CSS3 standard was quite difficult. People had to use different positioning properties and make sure the columns didn't fall apart while adding information.
Look at the example above. While it looks easier, creating this layout was very difficult. The most common problem was text moving around in columns. To solve this problem, we used several blocks with information strictly positioned in one place. Text moving around by itself or the article changing was out of the question.
Now this problem can be solved using only two(!) properties. We'll look at these and some other properties in this lesson.
Creating columns
To create columns in CSS, we can use the column-count property. It does exactly what it says. Just specify the number of columns and the browser will do everything for you.
Important: the information inside the columns is processed as is. This means that all the indents are preserved. When it comes to paragraphs, it is worth getting rid of the upper padding. This will keep the first paragraph in line with the other columns.
By default, the columns are divided evenly inside the container, and they'll take up all the available space. You can influence this behavior with the column-width property and set the optimal width of the columns. Optimal is the operative word here. Unlike the width property, you don't set an explicit width here, and if there is enough space in the container, then the columns will stretch to the full available width.
Why is this behavior necessary? Imagine we have a long text in two columns. For example, like on the image above. Without specifying the optimal width, the browser will line up the two columns based on the width of the device, regardless of what it may be. If this width is 300 pixels, then the columns will be 150 pixels each. It looks horrendous.
To prevent this, you can set an optimal width. If the browser can't make one column that width, then all the content will be lined up in one column. So much for adaptability. And these are just the first lessons :)
Go to the CodePen website and try narrowing your browser window. At a certain point, the columns will go away, and all the text will be lined up in one column.
Column spacing
You may have noticed in the examples above that browsers automatically put spaces between columns. More often than not, you shouldn't trust the browser. One of the rules of designing layouts and programming is that explicit is better than implicit. By default, the distance between columns is 1em. The em unit is calculated based on the font size. If the font size is 16 pixels, then 1em is 16 pixels.
You can set the spacing between columns using the column-gap property. You'll see this property a lot. It's pretty versatile.
You can use different units within the column-gap property. Let's take the values in pixels as an example. In future lessons, you'll learn about other units of measurement.
Try changing the value of the column-gap property and see how it affects the columns.
Borders between columns
The CSS Multi-column Layout module allows you to define a visual border between columns. If you're familiar with the border property, which sets element borders, then you'll be familiar with the behavior already. Previously, creating borders between columns had to be done yourself, much to layout designers' chagrin.
The column-rule property is used to create the border, which is a shorthand version of the following properties:
- column-rule-width – the width of the border
- column-rule-style – the border type. The values are the same as those from the border property
- column-rule-color – the color of the border
You can specify either three separate properties or use shorthand notation.
Spreading content across multiple columns
If you imagine a newspaper, the text isn't always strictly in columns. A common situation is that the headline, which is placed over all the columns, seems to separate them horizontally.
The column-span property is used to separate columns. It takes just two values:
- none - the default value. The text is just inside the columns
- all - the text sort of comes out of the column and separates them
Columns overflow
In the examples, you can see that all elements inside the columns are moved automatically. It's not a bad solution for text, but if there are small blocks, and we definitely don't want the information inside them to be moved around, then we need a few other properties. So, how do you control the overflow of content within columns? There are several rules for this, which we'll talk about in this section.
- break-before
- break-after
- break-inside
You can already tell by their names that it refers to moving items before and after and inside. All three properties take on a huge number of values since they are designed not only for columns but also for printing.
When working with CSS Multi-column Layout, we are most interested in the avoid value, which prohibits any breaks.
Take a look at the
element. It consists of an image and a caption. For clarity, let's put a border around it and see that the image is in one column and the caption is in another. This is a bad text layout. Without a border, it is completely unclear that the text is just a caption for the image and not a piece of independent text.
This break happens within the figure element. To prevent such a break, you can use the break-inside property and disable it within this element.
Find any newspaper article. Use CSS Multi-column Layout to recreate the layout.

While this born dabbler’s favourite pose was that of a Great Artist beguiled by rock’s possibilities as a vehicle, in truth he was more a rocker drawn to artiness because it worked better than any other pose he had tried (not that he was not eclectic—he admired Anthony Newley and Jacques Brel and studied mime with Lindsay Kemp).
\n
\n```\n\n```css\n.columns-2 {\n column-count: 2;\n}\n```\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_columns_count by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\n---\n\n**Important**: the information inside the columns is processed as is. This means that all the indents are preserved. When it comes to paragraphs, it is worth getting rid of the upper padding. This will keep the first paragraph in line with the other columns.\n\n```css\n.columns-2 p {\n margin-top: 0;\n}\n```\n\n---\n\nBy default, the columns are divided evenly inside the container, and they'll take up all the available space. You can influence this behavior with the `column-width` property and set the optimal width of the columns. _Optimal_ is the operative word here. Unlike the `width` property, you don't set an explicit width here, and if there is enough space in the container, then the columns will stretch to the full available width.\n\nWhy is this behavior necessary? Imagine we have a long text in two columns. For example, like on the image above. Without specifying the optimal width, the browser will line up the two columns based on the width of the device, regardless of what it may be. If this width is 300 pixels, then the columns will be 150 pixels each. It looks horrendous.\n\nTo prevent this, you can set an optimal width. If the browser can't make one column that width, then all the content will be lined up in one column. So much for adaptability. And these are just the first lessons :)\n\n```css\n.columns-2 {\n column-count: 2;\n column-width: 250px;\n}\n```\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_columns_count_width by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\nGo to the CodePen website and try narrowing your browser window. At a certain point, the columns will go away, and all the text will be lined up in one column.\n\n## Column spacing\n\nYou may have noticed in the examples above that browsers automatically put spaces between columns. More often than not, you shouldn't trust the browser. One of the rules of designing layouts and programming is that explicit is better than implicit. By default, the distance between columns is `1em`. The _em_ unit is calculated based on the font size. If the font size is 16 pixels, then `1em` is 16 pixels.\n\nYou can set the spacing between columns using the `column-gap` property. You'll see this property a lot. It's pretty versatile.\n\nYou can use different units within the `column-gap` property. Let's take the values in pixels as an example. In future lessons, you'll learn about other units of measurement.\n\n```css\n.columns-2 {\n column-count: 2;\n column-gap: 30px;\n column-width: 250px;\n}\n```\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_columns_gap by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\nTry changing the value of the `column-gap` property and see how it affects the columns.\n\n## Borders between columns\n\nThe CSS Multi-column Layout module allows you to define a visual border between columns. If you're familiar with the `border` property, which sets element borders, then you'll be familiar with the behavior already. Previously, creating borders between columns had to be done yourself, much to layout designers' chagrin.\n\nThe `column-rule` property is used to create the border, which is a shorthand version of the following properties:\n\n* `column-rule-width` – the width of the border\n* `column-rule-style` – the border type. The values are the same as those from the `border` property\n* `column-rule-color` – the color of the border\n\nYou can specify either three separate properties or use shorthand notation.\n\n```css\n.columns-2 {\n column-count: 2;\n column-gap: 30px;\n column-rule: 2px solid black;\n column-width: 250px;\n}\n```\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_columns_rule by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\n## Spreading content across multiple columns\n\nIf you imagine a newspaper, the text isn't always strictly in columns. A common situation is that the headline, which is placed over all the columns, seems to separate them horizontally.\n\nThe `column-span` property is used to separate columns. It takes just two values:\n\n* `none` - the default value. The text is just inside the columns\n* `all` - the text sort of comes out of the column and separates them\n\n```css\n.columns-2 {\n column-count: 2;\n column-gap: 30px;\n column-rule: 2px solid black;\n column-width: 250px;\n}\n\nh2 {\n text-align: center;\n column-span: all;\n}\n```\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_columns_span by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\n## Columns overflow\n\nIn the examples, you can see that all elements inside the columns are moved automatically. It's not a bad solution for text, but if there are small blocks, and we definitely don't want the information inside them to be moved around, then we need a few other properties. So, how do you control the overflow of content within columns? There are several rules for this, which we'll talk about in this section.\n\n* `break-before`\n* `break-after`\n* `break-inside`\n\nYou can already tell by their names that it refers to moving items before and after and inside. All three properties take on a huge number of values since they are designed not only for columns but also for printing.\n\nWhen working with CSS Multi-column Layout, we are most interested in the `avoid` value, which prohibits any breaks.\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_columns_break by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\nTake a look at the `
` element. It consists of an image and a caption. For clarity, let's put a border around it and see that the image is in one column and the caption is in another. This is a bad text layout. Without a border, it is completely unclear that the text is just a caption for the image and not a piece of independent text.\n\nThis break happens within the figure element. To prevent such a break, you can use the break-inside property and disable it within this element.\nFind any newspaper article. Use CSS Multi-column Layout to recreate the layout.\n\n```css\nfigure {\n border: 1px solid;\n break-inside: avoid;\n}\n```\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_columns_break_avoid by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n"},"lessonMember":null,"courseMember":null,"course":{"start_lesson":{"exercise":null,"units":[{"id":5562,"name":"theory","url":"/courses/css-content/lessons/intro/theory_unit"}],"links":[],"ordered_units":[{"id":5562,"name":"theory","url":"/courses/css-content/lessons/intro/theory_unit"}],"id":2465,"slug":"intro","state":"approved","name":"Intro","course_order":50,"goal":"Learn about the course topics and goals. Behind all the beautiful animations, panels, and images is all sorts of hidden content. The content is what the user comes to a website or opens an app for. The user's mood often depends on how good the content looks and feels.\n\nIn this course, we'll go through the fundamentals of working with content and how to make animations. You'll learn:\n\n* how to create styles for fonts and lists\n* how to create and style tables\n* how to use columns using the `columns` property\n* about the different units of measurement and how to work with them\n* how to create forms and use media elements\n* the basic rules of animation and typography\n* how to make content accessible\n\n## Practice\n\nMany of the lessons in this course will include a practice section with a web view. It's a good idea to do more than just complete the task. Once you've completed the task successfully, try experimenting with the code and the features you've learned.\n\nPractice segments in this course are built around a system of snapshot testing. Unlike other courses, this one doesn't check against the values you specify, but rather takes a screenshot of the page with your styles and compares it to the screenshots from the teacher's solution. You can easily see how the page should look at different _viewport_ resolutions.\n\nYou can see screenshots with styles from the teacher's solution in \\_\\_tests__/__image_snapshots\\_\\_.\n\n## Testing the solution\n\nStudents' solutions are mostly tested using the _Visual Regression Testing_ method, i.e., by _comparing screenshots_. Without going into technical details, the test is as follows:\n\n1. The exercise contains reference screenshots that were taken based on the teacher's solution\n2. When you click on the \"Check\" button, the student's solution is sent to a Chromium-based browser and screenshotted\n3. The screenshot is compared with the reference screenshot, and then the tests give a text result of the comparison\n\nIf there's a difference of more than 2% detected, the system will produce one of two possible errors:\n\n### Different sizes of screenshots\n\n\n\nThe system says that the dimensions of the images do not match. In this example, the reference screenshot is `370px x 558px`, and the comparison screenshot is `370px x 524px`.\n\nMost likely, there is a problem with the indentation/height or line spacing. Carefully analyze the screenshots, in the `__diff_output__` directory. The specific path is given in the test output, and the files can be found in the left area of the exercise.\n\nYou'll find two files:\n\n* _name-test-actual.jpg_ – the screenshot of your solution\n* _name-test-expected.jpg_ – the reference screenshot\n\n### Visual Differences\n\n\n\nIn this test, the system is reporting that the images have an 810-pixel difference. In this case, three files are generated instead of two:\n\n* _name-test-actual.jpg_ – the screenshot of your solution\n* _name-test-expected.jpg_ – the reference screenshot\n* _name-test-diff.jpg_ - the screenshot obtained by overlaying the student's screenshot and the reference screenshot. This is how you see the areas that are different\n\nThe screenshot with the differences looks something like this:\n\n\n\nThe places where the differences were found are highlighted in red. In this case, you can compare the screenshots yourself.\n\n---\n\n**Important**: fix the differences going from top to bottom. Often there is a situation where a small error in the indentation affects the entire screenshot. It looks like everything is wrong, but only one property needs to be fixed\n\n---\n\n### CodePen\n\nAnother opportunity to apply the skills learned in the course is to use the [CodePen](https://codepen.io) service. You can create your own pen, where you can experiment with properties.\n\nAdditionally, there'll be examples that are loaded from **CodePen** in each lesson of the course. They're available for review, and you can make edits in real-time and monitor the result. Don't miss out on this opportunity.\n\nDon't forget to practice all the time, that way you boost your content markup skills and be able to quickly and skillfully design all the content on a page or app.\n"},"id":262,"slug":"css-content","challenges_count":4,"name":"Content layout fundamentals","allow_indexing":true,"state":"approved","course_state":"finished","pricing_type":"paid","description":"The course focuses on working with content using CSS and HTML.

To create columns in CSS, we can use the
column-count
property. It does exactly what it says. Just specify the number of columns and the browser will do everything for you.

David Bowie, original name David Robert Jones, (born January 8, 1947, London, England—died January 10, 2016, New York, New York, U.S.), British singer, songwriter, and actor who was most prominent in the 1970s and best known for his shifting personae and musical genre hopping.

To call Bowie a transitional figure in rock history is less a judgment than a job description. Every niche he ever found was on a cusp, and he was at home nowhere else—certainly not in the unmoneyed London suburb where his childhood was as dingy as his adult life would be glitzy.

You can influence this behavior with the
column-width
property and set the optimal width of the columns. Optimal is the operative word here. Unlike the
width
property, you don't set an explicit width here, and if there is enough space in the container, then the columns will stretch to the full available width.

Column spacing

You may have noticed in the examples above that browsers automatically put spaces between columns. More often than not, you shouldn't trust the browser. One of the rules of designing layouts and programming is that explicit is better than implicit. By default, the distance between columns is
1em
. The em unit is calculated based on the font size. If the font size is 16 pixels, then
1em
is 16 pixels.

You can set the spacing between columns using the
column-gap
property. You'll see this property a lot. It's pretty versatile.

You can use different units within the
column-gap
property.
Borders between columns

The CSS Multi-column Layout module allows you to define a visual border between columns. If you're familiar with the
border
property, which sets element borders, then you'll be familiar with the behavior already. Previously, creating borders between columns had to be done yourself, much to layout designers' chagrin.

The
column-rule
property is used to create the border, which is a shorthand version of the following properties:

column-rule-width
– the width of the border

Spreading content across multiple columns

If you imagine a newspaper, the text isn't always strictly in columns. A common situation is that the headline, which is placed over all the columns, seems to separate them horizontally.

The
column-span
property is used to separate columns.
Columns overflow

In the examples, you can see that all elements inside the columns are moved automatically. It's not a bad solution for text, but if there are small blocks, and we definitely don't want the information inside them to be moved around, then we need a few other properties. So, how do you control the overflow of content within columns? There are several rules for this, which we'll talk about in this section.

break-before

break-after

break-inside

You can already tell by their names that it refers to moving items before and after and inside. All three properties take on a huge number of values since they are designed not only for columns but also for printing.

When working with CSS Multi-column Layout, we are most interested in the
avoid
value, which prohibits any breaks.

Take a look at the

element. It consists of an image and a caption. For clarity, let's put a border around it and see that the image is in one column and the caption is in another. This is a bad text layout. Without a border, it is completely unclear that the text is just a caption for the image and not a piece of independent text.
