Lesson notes
- Functions are kind of special machines we can create that do stuff for us
- Functions can be thought of as black boxes, that take something in and spit something out
- Function takes in arguments
- And can return something
Define an call a function like so:
Here, radius is an argument of surfaceAreaCalculator function.
You can call a function and pass another function call as an argument:

Lesson transcript
Last time we managed to simplify our calculation with constants: we have created a constant for pi and used it when finding out the surface area of different planets. This way we have reduced the amount of code, but we still had lots of repetitions:
A line of code is called a statement, and statements in JavaScript should end with a semicolon. Here we have two statements, and we still have to repeat the whole formula in each statement. And remember — we don't want to repeat stuff in our programs.
It'd be cool if we had some sort of a separate special machine that calculates the surface area of any given sphere. So that we could do something like this:
Just tell it "hey, surfaceAreaCalculator, give me the surface area of a sphere of radius 3390" and it just gives you the answer.
Good news! We can actually create machines like this! They are called functions, and you can think of them as black boxes. Put something inside the box — and the box spits out something else. In this case, the surfaceAreaCalculator box would take in one number — the radius, and spit out another number — the surface area.
So, in this example
we are calling the surfaceAreaCalculator box, giving it 3390, and getting back the answer. This answer is then stored in the surfaceOfMars constant.
It's important to understand the difference between two things: defining a function and calling a function. What we did just now was calling — we called the surfaceAreaCalculator function, in other words, we assumed it already exists and we used it.
But it has to exist, so we have to create it before calling. We have to define the surfaceAreaCalculator function. This is the function definition:
This structure, with brackets, an arrow and curly brackets denotes a function. This radius in brackets is how the function will refer to the number we pass in. In other words, radius is the name for the number that exists inside the function when we call it. It's an argument of the function. This particular function takes in one argument, but other functions may take more arguments or take no arguments at all.
The curly brackets create a block. You'll see blocks a lot in JavaScript and other languages too. They create a group of statements, and this is how we know where the function starts and ends. This function only has one statement — it starts with return, and then you see the already familiar formula.
You probably already guessed that return makes the box spit out the result. The result of the calculation 4 * pi * radius * radius is what the function returns to us after we call it.
Now, we need to give this function some name, so that we can call it by name. I want it to be surfaceAreaCalculator, but you can give any function any name. There are certain rules, like, the name cannot have spaces in it, and you cannot use some special words like const, for example, but otherwise, you can call your functions and your constants as you like.
We already know how to give numbers a name — by creating a constant:
It's exactly the same with functions:
const, the name you want, the equal sign and then goes the function itself.
So, let's bring everything together:
At the top there's a function definition, and then we have a function call.
Let's look inside the box — what's happening when it's called with 3390 as an argument. return wants to return the result, but it's not ready yet — calculation should happen first. The argument is used in the calculation, so first it needs to replace the name radius with the actual value that was passed in, and then do the multiplications:
And 144340776 is then returned. You can also imagine what happens outside when our function returns the value:
Now surfaceOfMars is a constant with a certain numeric value.
Let's take a look at another example:
This function takes two numbers and returns the percentage. If you give it 40 and 80, it will return 50, becase 40 is 50% of 80.
As you see, when there are multiple arguments, they are separated by commas.
Let's print the result onto the screen:
Today is December 16, and I want to know what percentage of December is already gone. Look at this second statement — there are two important points here.
First: we can put the function call in any place where we can put a string, a number or a constant. On the first line we printed a string, and on the second line we printed whatever the percentageCalculator has returned.
And the second important point: function calls can be arguments for other functions! console.log is a function — this is why we have brackets when we use it. console.log function takes an argument and prints it on the screen. We put the function call AS the argument, and it worked. Our function was called first, then the result was returned, then console.log was called with our result as an argument and it got printed.
Okay, that's it for me, it's your turn now. Continue to the exercise and write your own function.

Here we have two statements, and we still have to repeat the whole formula in each statement. And remember — we don't want to repeat stuff in our programs.\n\nIt'd be cool if we had some sort of a separate special machine that calculates the surface area of any given sphere. So that we could do something like this:\n\n```javascript\nconst surfaceOfMars = surfaceAreaCalculator(3390);\nconst surfaceOfMercury = surfaceAreaCalculator(2440);\n```\n\nJust tell it \"hey, surfaceAreaCalculator, give me the surface area of a sphere of radius 3390\" and it just gives you the answer.\n\nGood news! We can actually create machines like this! They are called **functions**, and you can think of them as black boxes. Put something inside the box — and the box spits out something else. In this case, the `surfaceAreaCalculator` box would take in one number — the radius, and spit out another number — the surface area.\n\nSo, in this example\n\n```javascript\nconst surfaceOfMars = surfaceAreaCalculator(3390);\n```\n\nwe are calling the `surfaceAreaCalculator` box, giving it 3390, and getting back the answer. This answer is then stored in the `surfaceOfMars` constant.\n\nIt's important to understand the difference between two things: defining a function and calling a function. What we did just now was calling — we **called** the `surfaceAreaCalculator` function, in other words, we assumed it already exists and we used it.\n\nBut it has to exist, so we have to create it before calling. We have to **define** the `surfaceAreaCalculator` function. This is the function definition:\n\n```javascript\n(radius) => {\n return 4 * 3.14 * radius * radius;\n}\n```\n\nThis structure, with brackets, an arrow and curly brackets denotes a function. This `radius` in brackets is how the function will refer to the number we pass in. In other words, `radius` is the name for the number that exists inside the function when we call it. It's an **argument** of the function. This particular function takes in one **argument**, but other functions may take more arguments or take no arguments at all.\n\nThe curly brackets create a **block**. You'll see blocks a lot in JavaScript and other languages too. They create a group of **statements**, and this is how we know where the function starts and ends. This function only has one statement — it starts with `return`, and then you see the already familiar formula.\n\nYou probably already guessed that `return` makes the box spit out the result. The result of the calculation `4 * pi * radius * radius` is what the function **returns** to us after we call it.\n\nNow, we need to give this function some name, so that we can call it by name. I want it to be `surfaceAreaCalculator`, but you can give any function any name. There are certain rules, like, the name cannot have spaces in it, and you cannot use some special words like `const`, for example, but otherwise, you can call your functions and your constants as you like.\n\nWe already know how to give numbers a name — by creating a constant:\n\n```javascript\ncosnt pi = 3.14;\n```\n\nIt's exactly the same with functions:\n\n```javascript\nconst surfaceAreaCalculator = (radius) => {\n return 4 * 3.14 * radius * radius;\n}\n```\n\n`const`, the name you want, the equal sign and then goes the function itself.\n\nSo, let's bring everything together:\n\n```javascript\nconst surfaceAreaCalculator = (radius) => {\n return 4 * 3.14 * radius * radius;\n}\n\nconst surfaceOfMars = surfaceAreaCalculator(3390);\n```\n\nAt the top there's a function definition, and then we have a function call.\n\nLet's look inside the box — what's happening when it's called with 3390 as an argument. `return` wants to return the result, but it's not ready yet — calculation should happen first. The argument is used in the calculation, so first it needs to replace the name `radius` with the actual value that was passed in, and then do the multiplications:\n\n```javascript\n4 * 3.14 * radius * radius;\n4 * 3.14 * 3390 * 3390;\n12.56 * 3390 * 3390;\n42578.4 * 3390;\n144340776;\n```\n\nAnd `144340776` is then returned. You can also imagine what happens outside when our function returns the value:\n\n```javascript\nconst surfaceOfMars = surfaceAreaCalculator(3390);\nconst surfaceOfMars = 144340776;\n```\n\nNow `surfaceOfMars` is a constant with a certain numeric value.\n\nLet's take a look at another example:\n\n```javascript\nconst percentageCalculator = (number, total) => {\n return number * 100 / total;\n}\n```\n\nThis function takes two numbers and returns the percentage. If you give it 40 and 80, it will return 50, becase 40 is 50% of 80.\n\nAs you see, when there are multiple arguments, they are separated by commas.\n\nLet's print the result onto the screen:\n\n```javascript\nconsole.log(\"How much of December is gone already? \");\nconsole.log(percentageCalculator(16, 31));\n```\n\nToday is December 16, and I want to know what percentage of December is already gone. Look at this second statement — there are two important points here.\n\nFirst: we can put the function call in any place where we can put a string, a number or a constant. On the first line we printed a string, and on the second line we printed whatever the `percentageCalculator` has returned.\n\nAnd the second important point: function calls can be arguments for other functions! `console.log` is a function — this is why we have brackets when we use it. `console.log` function takes an argument and prints it on the screen. We put the function call AS the argument, and it worked. Our function was called first, then the result was returned, then `console.log` was called with our result as an argument and it got printed.\n\nOkay, that's it for me, it's your turn now. Continue to the exercise and write your own function.\n"},"lessonMember":null,"courseMember":null,"course":{"start_lesson":{"exercise":null,"units":[{"id":1662,"name":"theory","url":"/courses/intro_to_programming/lessons/intro/theory_unit"}],"links":[],"ordered_units":[{"id":1662,"name":"theory","url":"/courses/intro_to_programming/lessons/intro/theory_unit"}],"id":813,"slug":"intro","state":"approved","name":"What is a computer anyway?","course_order":110,"goal":"We'll ask and try to answer some simple but important questions: What is a computer anyway? The box was obviously not alive, but the buttons intrigued him.\n\nTota discovered an interesting thing: if he pushed X once and O once, then pulled the lever, then O would glow for a momemnt, then X would glow for a moment.\n\nDid I tell you that Tota was remarkably smart? Top of his cave.\n\nHe then decided to push the buttons in the same way as they glow: O, then X, then pulled the lever. The box answered again.\n\nTota repeated the new pattern. There was another answer. When Tota pushed the last pattern, the box beeped and a produced a ball of lightning, scaring Tota immensely and putting the tree in front of him on fire.\n\nSo, now Tota had this weapon of sorts. He killed many animals with it, and enjoyed many meals near a fire.\n\nSoon he discovered more patterns: one would create some noise he really hated, another would spit a long leaf with markings, and others would do nothing at all.\n\nOnce Tota found an even more advanced feature of this device. He wanted to make fire again, but instead of just pushing the lever once, he pushed and held it. When he released it moments later, no fire came out, but both X and O started blinking. He desperately pressed O and they stopped blinking. From then on, simple O and a lever push produced the fire, so much easier and faster than before!\n\nHe realized that he had trained this beast just like he trained a baby wolf one day.\n\nSo... what is this thing?\n\nOf course, Tota calls it Boomwoom, but we can clearly come up with something better. At first, one might think this is some sort of overly complicated weapon. But it does some other weird stuff, like music... and even printing. It's not like a home appliance, although, some washing machines are more complicated to operate.\n\nLet's start with the buttons. Seems like the machine \"understands\" certain combinations and doesn't understand others. We don't know the meaning of the buttons and combinations, so I want to call it \"code\", as in \"I have no idea what that is, but it probably means something\". Some codes work, some don't, just like in our speech some sounds mean something, and others don't. 'Language' seems like a good word for it. This machine understands certain language of codes.\n\nOkay, how do we call this machine then? Code-language-understander? \"Understand\" sounds important to us, but the key thing about the machine is not that it just understands, but does something as a result. It understands the code for \"fire flash\", and immediately produces the fire flash. So, it's more like... code-language-performer? It performs some actions.\n\nThe guy from the future who sent this thing to the stone age might call it differently, but we today would definitely call this machine a \"computer\". That's how we call machines that accept code and perform some actions.\n\nYou might think this is a terrible computer with some terrible code. Today we have these magical devices with awesome features and programming languages with easy to read codes like this:\n\nBy the way, you will be able to write and understand this easily by the end of the course.\n\nAnd yes, nowadays computers are different. But... not too different. We haven't yet explored this machine thoroughly enough, but trust me: fundamentally, they are the same. Just like this... is very different to this... both use the same principles and capable of the same thing, to different extent.\n\nSo, we can keep looking at that weird machine and understand something important about computer programming in general:\n\nFirst: Computer understands a particular, strict language. Random pushes don't do much, only certain combinations work. And one tiny mistake in a pattern breaks everything. And second: Computers are really stupid\n\nYou might think this last part is due to this particular computer being weird and underpowered, but I am really talking about computers in general. They are very powerful but very stupid. Make no mistake, all they do is perform whatever we tell them. No magic. But, of course, for Tota it's magic indeed, just like some modern devices are magic to us, unless we learn computer programming. Fortunately, this is exactly what we are going to do in this course.\n\n## Synopsis\n\n- Computer accepts code and performs actions\n- Computer understands certain language of codes:\n - Some codes work\n - Some codes don't work\n - There are strict rules about code\n- Unlike people computers are fundamentally not smart, they only do what we tell them to do.
It'd be cool if we had some sort of a separate special machine that calculates the surface area of any given sphere. So that we could do something like this:

const surfaceOfMars = surfaceAreaCalculator(3390);

In this case, the
surfaceAreaCalculator
box would take in one number — the radius, and spit out another number — the surface area.

So, in this example

const surfaceOfMars = surfaceAreaCalculator(3390);

Expand code

we are calling the
surfaceAreaCalculator
box, giving it 3390, and getting back the answer. This answer is then stored in the
surfaceOfMars
constant.

It's important to understand the difference between two things: defining a function and calling a function. What we did just now was calling — we called the
surfaceAreaCalculator
function, in other words, we assumed it already exists and we used it.

But it has to exist, so we have to create it before calling. We have to define the
surfaceAreaCalculator
function. This is the function definition:

(radius) => {

}

Expand code

This structure, with brackets, an arrow and curly brackets denotes a function. This
radius
in brackets is how the function will refer to the number we pass in. In other words,
radius
is the name for the number that exists inside the function when we call it. It's an argument of the function. This particular function takes in one argument, but other functions may take more arguments or take no arguments at all.

The curly brackets create a block. You'll see blocks a lot in JavaScript and other languages too. They create a group of statements, and this is how we know where the function starts and ends. This function only has one statement — it starts with
return
, and then you see the already familiar formula.

You probably already guessed that
return
makes the box spit out the result. The result of the calculation
4 * pi * radius * radius
is what the function returns to us after we call it.

Now, we need to give this function some name, so that we can call it by name. I want it to be
surfaceAreaCalculator
, but you can give any function any name. There are certain rules, like, the name cannot have spaces in it, and you cannot use some special words like
const
, for example, but otherwise, you can call your functions and your constants as you like.

We already know how to give numbers a name — by creating a constant:

Today is December 16, and I want to know what percentage of December is already gone. Look at this second statement — there are two important points here.

First: we can put the function call in any place where we can put a string, a number or a constant. On the first line we printed a string, and on the second line we printed whatever the
percentageCalculator
has returned.

And the second important point: function calls can be arguments for other functions!
console.log
is a function — this is why we have brackets when we use it.
console.log
function takes an argument and prints it on the screen. We put the function call AS the argument, and it worked. Our function was called first, then the result was returned, then
console.log
was called with our result as an argument and it got printed.

Okay, that's it for me, it's your turn now. Continue to the exercise and write your own function.

<style
