Python's creators wanted its users to actively and effectively use built-in collections.
Therefore, the language inclines the programmer toward a particular work style when choosing an approach. The language itself encourages the use of an imperative style combined with procedural and object-oriented programming.
In Python, collections are objects. We modify them mostly in place, which gives them their modifiable state. However, the language also has a place for elements of functional programming. Developers often consider it a subspecies of declarative programming because functional code looks like a data conversion pipeline.
In this lesson, we'll look at imperative and functional code in Python. In both cases, we'll try displaying a sorted list of unique elements from a set of numbers.
Procedural solution
When we use procedural solutions, we still split the program into subroutines that change the state instead of returning a value. The code will look like this:
This solution is quite efficient — it only consumes memory for a copy of the original list, then compresses it and sorts it in place. This solution has predictable memory consumption, independent of the input data. And after applying filter_and_sort(), we can further process the data in the same way but with other procedures.
This code is efficient but forces the programmer to remember a lot. It increases the likelihood of errors. For example, we may forget to get a copy of the INPUT list before we start processing — then we'll accidentally sort the original INPUT list itself. Incorrectly changing the wrong entities like this can lead to unpleasant consequences. And such errors don't just float up to the surface. The program will still display the correct numbers, so we will not see the problem immediately.
Functional solution
Let's write a functional version with elements of declarative style:
The code describes what kind of result we want to get:
- print() — printed
- '\n'.join(...) — combined via line feed
- map(str, ...) — sequence of strings
- sorted(set(...))— obtained from a sorted set of initial numbers
Note that there are no variables in the code. You can work with much less code and don't have to copy anything securely.
Let's try to analyze how this code works:
- Creates an intermediate set set()
- Creates a copy list inside sorted()
- Creates a line for each resulting number
- Launches the '\n'.join() function
- The function assembles a string of size equal to the sum of all string lengths plus the number of line feeds
As you can see, short code means more resources.
Even if the original list doesn't contain too many repetitions, the intermediate structures will occupy much more memory than the original list due to the many temporary strings. They are significantly larger than the initial numbers. It turns out that memory consumption strongly depends on the composition of the input data.
The truth is somewhere in the middle
Functional solutions read well if the developer is familiar with this style. Code readability is an important characteristic, so you can choose this option if you have a small amount of input data.
The procedural solution is quite hard to read: you have to execute the code in your mind. It is more challenging to change this code because it is too specific and tied to the task at hand. Also, we should remember that the procedure filter_and_sort() modifies its argument. However, procedural code works efficiently and predictably. This option may be preferable if you have a lot of data with little repetition. However, we can improve both solutions with a bit of a departure from the paradigm.
For example, in a functional solution, you can apply a loop:
This code doesn't create intermediate lines because print() already knows how to print numbers. We do not put the big string together before output. It is the most noticeable saving.
Let's complicate the situation and imagine that all input elements are unique. The set will be a copy of the original list in this case. There'll be another copy inside sorted(). We'll end up with two copies. Let's see how else we can improve the imperative version:
This version reads much better because no procedure modifies a copy of the original list. There's no need to copy the input list explicitly — there'll be an implicit copy in sorted(). But now, if you need to work with the result of sorting before printing, you'll have to aggregate the values in an intermediate list.
In most cases, Python programmers choose the functional approach and refine it. They end with a balance — the code is still compact and works effectively.

You can split the code into functions differently, name variables in different ways, or change the nesting depth of conditional constructs. These are all metrics of code quality and the individual components that make **coding style**.\n\nHowever, coding style has almost no effect on the specific task and the solution architecture. We determine these properties by choosing the [programming paradigm](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Programming_paradigm).\n\n**A programming paradigm** is a set of ideas about how to solve a problem. We start applying the paradigm even before we start writing code. The code in a particular language merely allows us to write our thoughts in a program with a greater or lesser degree of convenience.\n\nAn experienced programmer knows how to:\n\n* Think in the right way and various paradigms\n* Apply different paradigms\n* Choose the right paradigm for specific tasks\n* Write their thoughts in code in different programming languages\n\nWe can say that the paradigm is suitable for any programming language when you don't need to battle with the language and change your approach to solve a problem. If the paradigm fits the language, the programmer writes down their thoughts as they are.\n\nPython and most modern high-level programming languages are considered multiparadigms. In other words, you can use many different paradigms. It won't be any less convenient.\n\nC and other low-level languages cannot afford this freedom because code in these languages must be efficient. In these languages, solutions are tied as much as possible to how the task is understood by the computer, not by the developer.\n\n## Imperative programming\n\nLet's imagine that we need to solve a complex problem. We cannot solve it in one computer action, so we describe **a sequence of steps** to be performed.\n\nWe break down the broad steps into smaller ones until the interpreter or compiler of the chosen language can understand each step. Simply put, we think through and describe **how to achieve the desired result**. This description of a sequence of steps is called [imperative programming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperative_programming).\n\nImperative programming involves changing the state of the computer. Large programs constantly modify global and local variables:\n\n* Write things to the disk\n* Send and receive from the network\n* Run individual subroutines and procedures\n\nSuch a code ensures the highest possible efficiency. But there is a disadvantage: it forces the programmer to remember everything that changes with each step.\n\nMost low-level languages assume you'll be coding only in this paradigm — after all, all the computer does is sequentially execute machine language commands and change the memory state. Many high-level languages also involve imperative problem-solving.\n\n## Declarative programming\n\nWhen we work on problems, the first thing we do is imagine the desired outcome. Then, we think of a way to get there. Programmers also use this approach. Sometimes, a programmer can describe the result, and the computer will find ways to achieve it.\n\n[Declarative programming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Declarative_programming) works this way. When solving a problem in a declarative style, we describe how the result relates to the input data. We can refine the details until the interpreter has enough information to proceed. By specifying our requirements, we still don't tell the computer exactly how to do the job — we describe the ratio of inputs to outputs more precisely.\n\nDeclarative programming is often like writing a formula or combining individual processes into a pipeline that generates output data from input data. We break complicated expressions into simpler ones and divide complex operations into chains of simpler ones. When you break it down, you don't have to think about how the state of the computer will change and how it will store intermediate data.\n\nWriting and reading the code are easier this way, but it complicates the interpreter or compiler itself. And the more difficult it becomes to make interpreters and compilers that will allow the computer to run efficiently.\n\nIt is why low-level languages have almost no tools for declarative programming because, for such languages, the main thing is efficiency. However, not every high-level language provides the means to solve any problem strictly declaratively. Usually, we only talk about the elements of declarative programming.\n\n## No silver bullet\n\nIt's human nature to think in declarative terms. Take mathematics as an example: we know the axioms and theorems, for example:\n\n```md\nThe square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides\n```\n\nWe usually reason in these declarative terms. The same thought would go like this imperatively:\n\n```md\nTake the first side, multiply by itself, memorize, add, and memorize the result,\nand extract the root from the previous result\n```\n\nIf our computers were infinitely productive and comprehensible, any code would be declarative.\n\nHowever, we don't have such efficient computers and cannot describe every task declaratively. There is no perfect solution — a point made by software engineer Frederick Brooks in his famous article [«No Silver Bullet»](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Silver_Bullet).\n\nSince we don't have a perfect solution, we have to be happy with:\n\n* Purely declarative problem-solving in limited subject areas — for example, when working with [SQL language](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SQL) and [subject-oriented languages](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain-specific_language)\n* Declarative style with elements of imperative style\n\nWe can use Python to implement declarative subject-oriented languages to suit the task. But that's not all — you can write declaratively with elements of imperative writing. That's what this course is all about.\n\n## The confusing terminology\n\nIn different sources, you can encounter the term **functional style**. In such cases, people talk about the programming paradigm, not the coding style. So, focus on the adjective \"functional\" rather than the noun \"style\".\n\nThere are also variations, like \"in a functional way\". We need to pay attention to the adjective here, too.\n\n## How to prepare for this course\n\nTo prepare for the declarative approach, you need to master the basics of programming language syntax, functions, and working with collections. We covered these topics in detail in the following courses:\n\n* [Python Basics](https://hexlet.io/courses/python-basics)\n* [Lists](https://hexlet.io/courses/python-lists)\n* [Dictionaries](https://hexlet.io/courses/python-dicts)\n* [Functions](https://hexlet.io/courses/python-functions)\n\nYou can find the correct sequence of courses in the syllabus for the [Python Developer](https://hexlet.io/programs/python).\n"},"id":363,"slug":"python-declarative-programming","challenges_count":0,"name":"Python: Declarative programming","allow_indexing":true,"state":"approved","course_state":"finished","pricing_type":"paid","description":"In this course, you will learn the tools of declarative programming. collections.</p>
<p>Therefore, the language inclines the programmer toward a particular work style when choosing an approach. The language itself encourages the use of an imperative style combined with <a style="text-decoration:underline" class="mantine-focus-auto m_849cf0da m_b6d8b162 mantine-Text-root mantine-Anchor-root" data-underline="hover" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Procedural_programming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">procedural</a> and <a style="text-decoration:underline" class="mantine-focus-auto m_849cf0da m_b6d8b162 mantine-Text-root mantine-Anchor-root" data-underline="hover" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Object-oriented_programming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">object-oriented programming</a>.</p>
<p>In Python, collections are objects. We modify them mostly in place, which gives them their modifiable state. However, the language also has a place for elements of <a style="text-decoration:underline" class="mantine-focus-auto m_849cf0da m_b6d8b162 mantine-Text-root mantine-Anchor-root" data-underline="hover" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Functional_programming" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">functional programming</a>. Developers often consider it a subspecies of declarative programming because functional code looks like a data conversion pipeline.</p>
<p>In this lesson, we'll look at imperative and functional code in Python. In both cases, we'll try displaying a sorted list of unique elements from a set of numbers.</p>
<h2 id="heading-2-1">Procedural solution</h2>
<p>When we use procedural solutions, we still split the program into subroutines that change the state instead of returning a value. The code will look like this:</p>
<div style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight" dir="ltr"><div class="m_be7e9c9c mantine-CodeHighlight-controls"><button style="--ai-bg:transparent;--ai-hover:transparent;--ai-color:inherit;--ai-bd:none" class="mantine-focus-auto mantine-active m_d498bab7 mantine-CodeHighlight-control m_8d3f4000 mantine-ActionIcon-root m_87cf2631 mantine-UnstyledButton-root" data-variant="none" type="button" aria-label="Copy code"><span class="m_8d3afb97 mantine-ActionIcon-icon"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24" stroke-width="2" stroke="currentColor" fill="none" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round"><path stroke="none" d="M0 0h24v24H0z" fill="none"></path><path d="M8 8m0 2a2 2 0 0 1 2 -2h8a2 2 0 0 1 2 2v8a2 2 0 0 1 -2 2h-8a2 2 0 0 1 -2 -2z"></path><path d="M16 8v-2a2 2 0 0 0 -2 -2h-8a2 2 0 0 0 -2 2v8a2 2 0 0 0 2 2h2"></path></svg></span></button></div><div style="--scrollarea-scrollbar-size:calc(0.25rem * var(--mantine-scale));--sa-corner-width:0px;--sa-corner-height:0px" class="m_f744fd40 mantine-CodeHighlight-scrollarea m_d57069b5 mantine-ScrollArea-root" dir="ltr"><div style="overflow-x:hidden;overflow-y:hidden;overscroll-behavior-inline:none" class="m_c0783ff9 mantine-ScrollArea-viewport" data-scrollbars="xy"><div class="m_b1336c6 mantine-ScrollArea-content"><pre class="m_2c47c4fd mantine-CodeHighlight-pre" style="padding:0"><code class="m_5caae6d3 mantine-CodeHighlight-code">INPUT = [1, 2, 5, 12, 3, 5, 2, 7, 12]
def main():
numbers = INPUT[:]
filter_and_sort(numbers) # Sorting and filtering in place
for number in numbers:
print(number) # Outputting element by element in a loop
def filter_and_sort(values):
values.sort() # The list is sorted in place
previous_value = None
index = 0
while index < len(values):
value = values[index]
if value == previous_value and index > 0:
# We remove the item from the list, modifying the list again
values.pop(index)
else:
index += 1
previous_value = value</code></pre></div></div></div><button class="mantine-focus-auto m_c9378bc2 mantine-CodeHighlight-showCodeButton m_87cf2631 mantine-UnstyledButton-root" data-hidden="true" type="button">Expand code</button></div>
<p>This solution is quite efficient — it only consumes memory for a copy of the original list, then compresses it and sorts it in place. This solution has predictable memory consumption, independent of the input data. And after applying <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">filter_and_sort()</code>, we can further process the data in the same way but with other procedures.</p>
<p>This code is efficient but forces the programmer to remember a lot. It increases the likelihood of errors. For example, we may forget to get a copy of the <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">INPUT</code> list before we start processing — then we'll accidentally sort the original <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">INPUT</code> list itself. Incorrectly changing the wrong entities like this can lead to unpleasant consequences. And such errors don't just float up to the surface. The program will still display the correct numbers, so we will not see the problem immediately.</p>
<h2 id="heading-2-2">Functional solution</h2>
<p>Let's write a functional version with elements of declarative style:</p>
<div style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight" dir="ltr"><div class="m_be7e9c9c mantine-CodeHighlight-controls"><button style="--ai-bg:transparent;--ai-hover:transparent;--ai-color:inherit;--ai-bd:none" class="mantine-focus-auto mantine-active m_d498bab7 mantine-CodeHighlight-control m_8d3f4000 mantine-ActionIcon-root m_87cf2631 mantine-UnstyledButton-root" data-variant="none" type="button" aria-label="Copy code"><span class="m_8d3afb97 mantine-ActionIcon-icon"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24" stroke-width="2" stroke="currentColor" fill="none" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round"><path stroke="none" d="M0 0h24v24H0z" fill="none"></path><path d="M8 8m0 2a2 2 0 0 1 2 -2h8a2 2 0 0 1 2 2v8a2 2 0 0 1 -2 2h-8a2 2 0 0 1 -2 -2z"></path><path d="M16 8v-2a2 2 0 0 0 -2 -2h-8a2 2 0 0 0 -2 2v8a2 2 0 0 0 2 2h2"></path></svg></span></button></div><div style="--scrollarea-scrollbar-size:calc(0.25rem * var(--mantine-scale));--sa-corner-width:0px;--sa-corner-height:0px" class="m_f744fd40 mantine-CodeHighlight-scrollarea m_d57069b5 mantine-ScrollArea-root" dir="ltr"><div style="overflow-x:hidden;overflow-y:hidden;overscroll-behavior-inline:none" class="m_c0783ff9 mantine-ScrollArea-viewport" data-scrollbars="xy"><div class="m_b1336c6 mantine-ScrollArea-content"><pre class="m_2c47c4fd mantine-CodeHighlight-pre" style="padding:0"><code class="m_5caae6d3 mantine-CodeHighlight-code">INPUT = [1, 2, 5, 12, 3, 5, 2, 7, 12]
def main():
print('\n'.join(map(str, sorted(set(INPUT)))))</code></pre></div></div></div><button class="mantine-focus-auto m_c9378bc2 mantine-CodeHighlight-showCodeButton m_87cf2631 mantine-UnstyledButton-root" data-hidden="true" type="button">Expand code</button></div>
<p>The code describes what kind of result we want to get:</p>
<ul>
<li><code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">print()</code> — printed</li>
<li><code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">'\n'.join(...)</code> — combined via line feed</li>
<li><code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">map(str, ...)</code> — sequence of strings</li>
<li><code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">sorted(set(...))</code>— obtained from a sorted set of initial numbers</li>
</ul>
<p>Note that there are no variables in the code. You can work with much less code and don't have to copy anything securely.</p>
<p>Let's try to analyze how this code works:</p>
<ul>
<li>Creates an intermediate set <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">set()</code></li>
<li>Creates a copy list inside <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">sorted()</code></li>
<li>Creates a line for each resulting number</li>
<li>Launches the <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">'\n'.join()</code> function</li>
<li>The function assembles a string of size equal to the sum of all string lengths plus the number of line feeds</li>
</ul>
<p>As you can see, short code means more resources.</p>
<p>Even if the original list doesn't contain too many repetitions, the intermediate structures will occupy much more memory than the original list due to the many temporary strings. They are significantly larger than the initial numbers. It turns out that memory consumption strongly depends on the composition of the input data.</p>
<h2 id="heading-2-3">The truth is somewhere in the middle</h2>
<p>Functional solutions read well if the developer is familiar with this style. Code readability is an important characteristic, so you can choose this option if you have a small amount of input data.</p>
<p>The procedural solution is quite hard to read: you have to execute the code in your mind. It is more challenging to change this code because it is too specific and tied to the task at hand. Also, we should remember that the procedure <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">filter_and_sort()</code> modifies its argument. However, procedural code works efficiently and predictably. This option may be preferable if you have a lot of data with little repetition. However, we can improve both solutions with a bit of a departure from the paradigm.</p>
<p>For example, in a functional solution, you can apply a loop:</p>
<div style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight" dir="ltr"><div class="m_be7e9c9c mantine-CodeHighlight-controls"><button style="--ai-bg:transparent;--ai-hover:transparent;--ai-color:inherit;--ai-bd:none" class="mantine-focus-auto mantine-active m_d498bab7 mantine-CodeHighlight-control m_8d3f4000 mantine-ActionIcon-root m_87cf2631 mantine-UnstyledButton-root" data-variant="none" type="button" aria-label="Copy code"><span class="m_8d3afb97 mantine-ActionIcon-icon"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24" stroke-width="2" stroke="currentColor" fill="none" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round"><path stroke="none" d="M0 0h24v24H0z" fill="none"></path><path d="M8 8m0 2a2 2 0 0 1 2 -2h8a2 2 0 0 1 2 2v8a2 2 0 0 1 -2 2h-8a2 2 0 0 1 -2 -2z"></path><path d="M16 8v-2a2 2 0 0 0 -2 -2h-8a2 2 0 0 0 -2 2v8a2 2 0 0 0 2 2h2"></path></svg></span></button></div><div style="--scrollarea-scrollbar-size:calc(0.25rem * var(--mantine-scale));--sa-corner-width:0px;--sa-corner-height:0px" class="m_f744fd40 mantine-CodeHighlight-scrollarea m_d57069b5 mantine-ScrollArea-root" dir="ltr"><div style="overflow-x:hidden;overflow-y:hidden;overscroll-behavior-inline:none" class="m_c0783ff9 mantine-ScrollArea-viewport" data-scrollbars="xy"><div class="m_b1336c6 mantine-ScrollArea-content"><pre class="m_2c47c4fd mantine-CodeHighlight-pre" style="padding:0"><code class="m_5caae6d3 mantine-CodeHighlight-code">def main():
for number in sorted(set(INPUT)):
print(number)</code></pre></div></div></div><button class="mantine-focus-auto m_c9378bc2 mantine-CodeHighlight-showCodeButton m_87cf2631 mantine-UnstyledButton-root" data-hidden="true" type="button">Expand code</button></div>
<p>This code doesn't create intermediate lines because <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">print()</code> already knows how to print numbers. We do not put the big string together before output. It is the most noticeable saving.</p>
<p>Let's complicate the situation and imagine that all input elements are unique. The set will be a copy of the original list in this case. There'll be another copy inside <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">sorted()</code>. We'll end up with two copies. Let's see how else we can improve the imperative version:</p>
<div style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight" dir="ltr"><div class="m_be7e9c9c mantine-CodeHighlight-controls"><button style="--ai-bg:transparent;--ai-hover:transparent;--ai-color:inherit;--ai-bd:none" class="mantine-focus-auto mantine-active m_d498bab7 mantine-CodeHighlight-control m_8d3f4000 mantine-ActionIcon-root m_87cf2631 mantine-UnstyledButton-root" data-variant="none" type="button" aria-label="Copy code"><span class="m_8d3afb97 mantine-ActionIcon-icon"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" viewBox="0 0 24 24" stroke-width="2" stroke="currentColor" fill="none" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round"><path stroke="none" d="M0 0h24v24H0z" fill="none"></path><path d="M8 8m0 2a2 2 0 0 1 2 -2h8a2 2 0 0 1 2 2v8a2 2 0 0 1 -2 2h-8a2 2 0 0 1 -2 -2z"></path><path d="M16 8v-2a2 2 0 0 0 -2 -2h-8a2 2 0 0 0 -2 2v8a2 2 0 0 0 2 2h2"></path></svg></span></button></div><div style="--scrollarea-scrollbar-size:calc(0.25rem * var(--mantine-scale));--sa-corner-width:0px;--sa-corner-height:0px" class="m_f744fd40 mantine-CodeHighlight-scrollarea m_d57069b5 mantine-ScrollArea-root" dir="ltr"><div style="overflow-x:hidden;overflow-y:hidden;overscroll-behavior-inline:none" class="m_c0783ff9 mantine-ScrollArea-viewport" data-scrollbars="xy"><div class="m_b1336c6 mantine-ScrollArea-content"><pre class="m_2c47c4fd mantine-CodeHighlight-pre" style="padding:0"><code class="m_5caae6d3 mantine-CodeHighlight-code">def main():
previous_value = None
for value in sorted(INPUT):
if previous_value is None or value != previous_value:
previous_value = value
print(value)</code></pre></div></div></div><button class="mantine-focus-auto m_c9378bc2 mantine-CodeHighlight-showCodeButton m_87cf2631 mantine-UnstyledButton-root" data-hidden="true" type="button">Expand code</button></div>
<p>This version reads much better because no procedure modifies a copy of the original list. There's no need to copy the input list explicitly — there'll be an implicit copy in <code style="margin-bottom:var(--mantine-spacing-lg)" class="m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight m_e597c321 mantine-CodeHighlight-codeHighlight m_dfe9c588 mantine-InlineCodeHighlight-inlineCodeHighlight">sorted()</code>. But now, if you need to work with the result of sorting before printing, you'll have to aggregate the values in an intermediate list.</p>
<p>In most cases, Python programmers choose the functional approach and refine it. They end with a balance — the code is still compact and works effectively.</p></div></div></div></div><style
