In past lessons, you learned about px units. You may notice that you should specify 20px somewhere and that this value is fixed. It doesn't matter what's around the item with that value, what screen resolution, or what device is being used. Twenty pixels will always be twenty pixels.
A pixel is an absolute unit of measurement. As mentioned above, this unit of measurement is completely fixed and does not change due to external factors. You can only resize something by overriding it.
Besides absolute units of measurement, there are also relative units of measurement. You can tell by their name that they depend on something. We'll look at what it is they depend on at the end of the lesson.
This lesson will cover all the basic units of measurement. In fact, there are quite a few, but not all of them are used all the time. If you want to familiarize yourself with all the available units, there will be a link to the official docs at the end of the lesson.
Absolute units
Absolute units can generally be considered to be the simplest. As you get more experienced, you'll be able to tell the size of a particular element within the document just by looking at it.
The most common unit is the pixel. You'll already be familiar with it from other lessons. But what is a pixel? Without getting too technical, a pixel is the smallest particle on a screen that is used to create an image. Basically, we're saying how many of these elements on your device's screen should be occupied.
It's important to understand that 100 pixels on one screen may not equal 100 pixels on another. It all depends on the size of the pixels on the monitor. And this, in turn, depends on the characteristics of the screen and its resolution.
For these reasons, we can call the pixel both a relative and an absolute unit of measurement. It all depends on what point of view we're looking from. The pixel is important to us in the context of CSS, where it's an absolute unit.
Other absolute units are seldom used in web development. It's worth listing them, but chances are you'll never use them.
- cm - centimeters
- mm - millimeters
- Q - quarter millimeters
- in - inches
- pc - picas, a typographic term
- pt - point
Note that among these units are some you know from real life. This can be useful when setting up a print layout.
Relative units
This will be the most confusing part of the lesson. Relative units take their value from other values. The most versatile of these units are percentages. They always take their values from the closest parent element. The remaining units can be divided into two groups:
- Relative units calculated from the font size
- Relative units calculated from the screen size. This is a bit of a crude comparison; in fact, the calculation is based on the size of the viewport. You will learn about what this is in our course on adaptability
Percentage
As already mentioned, percentages are calculated from the value of the same property of the nearest parent. The parent is the element inside which the current block is located. For example:
Let's take the width and size of the font as an example.
What's going on here? Let's break it down step by step:
- The main parent
is sized in absolute units. The width is 400 pixels and the font size is 50 pixels
- The nested
has a size of 50%. This size is relative and is calculated relative to the nearest parent. This parent has a size of 400 pixels. Therefore, the block size will be 200 pixels
- A paragraph of text has a font size of 70%. The closest parent with a set font size is
. The paragraph will be set to a font size of 70% of 50 pixels. I.e., 35px
An interesting example is setting percentages for a tag or class that involves nesting. Take a look at the following example:
Before you go any further, try to analyze this markup and calculate what font sizes each list item will have. Don't worry if you get confused. It can be tricky.
Have you thought about it? Well done! Now let's see what it looks like:
Let's analyze the result:
- The font size of the first
element is 30 pixels
- All
elements have a font size of 70%. This means that the deeper the list is nested, the smaller the font size:
- Items 1, 2, 3, and 4 will have a size of 21 pixels
- Items 1.1 and 1.2 are inside Item 1. The font size of this element is 21 pixels. This follows from the last point. Now the font size is counted from precisely 21 pixels
- Items 1.1 and 1.2 will have a size of 14.7 pixels
- Items 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 are nested within Item 1.2. The font size of this item is 14.7 pixels. This follows from the last point
- Items 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 will have a font size of 10.29 pixels
Relative units calculated from the font size
Now you can breathe, the hardest part is over. If you've studied percentages carefully, then the other relative units won't cause any difficulty. Two basic relative units of measure depend on the size of the font: em and rem.
The value of em is very similar to the use of percent. It shows how much larger the size will be than the closest calculated font-size value. If you replace 70% with 0.7em in the last example with lists, the result will be the same.
So, what's the point of em? This unit of measure can be used not only for the font but also for any other properties that take a numerical value. For example, in the following code, the bottom margin will be 60px:
But if a paragraph has its own font-size value, then the em unit will be calculated from that. This is where the meaning of the phrase "than the nearest calculated font-size value" is calculated.
The second such unit is rem. The way it works is exactly the same as em. But there is one huge difference: the rem is counted from the font size of the root element. The root element is
. It's the font size of this element that's taken into account when calculating the rem unit.
Let's go back to the example with the list. Replacing em with rem gives a completely different result. 0.7rem is calculated from the same place, but without taking nesting into account. In total, each element will have a font size of 11.2px. This is due to the standard font size of 16 pixels in most browsers.
You will notice that the
element having 30px text plays no role in this case.
Relative units calculated from screen size
CSS allows you to set the dimensions relative to the current viewport size, that being the size of the browser window that is accessible without scrolling. The basic two units are vw (viewport width) and vh (viewport height). You can think of it as a percentage of the viewport size.
These units are often used to create a section for the entire available area of the browser.
Try resizing the browser window using the CodePen example. Whatever browser width you set, the size of the section will automatically change. Consequently, there'll be no opportunity to scroll either horizontally or vertically.

It all depends on what point of view we're looking from. The pixel is important to us in the context of CSS, where it's an absolute unit.\n\n```css\ndiv {\n height: 100px;\n\n /* A block element always takes up 100 pixels. The actual size (in centimeters) may be different on different devices */\n}\n```\n\nOther absolute units are seldom used in web development. It's worth listing them, but chances are you'll never use them.\n\n* cm - centimeters\n* mm - millimeters\n* Q - quarter millimeters\n* in - inches\n* pc - picas, a typographic term\n* pt - point\n\nNote that among these units are some you know from real life. This can be useful when setting up a print layout.\n\n## Relative units\n\nThis will be the most confusing part of the lesson. Relative units take their value from other values. The most versatile of these units are percentages. They always take their values from the closest parent element. The remaining units can be divided into two groups:\n\n* Relative units calculated from the font size\n* Relative units calculated from the screen size. This is a bit of a crude comparison; in fact, the calculation is based on the size of the _viewport_. You will learn about what this is in our course on adaptability\n\n### Percentage\n\nAs already mentioned, percentages are calculated from the value of the same property of the nearest parent. The parent is the element inside which the current block is located. For example:\n\n```html\n
\n
\n \n
\n \n
\n \n

\n

\n
\n
\n
\n
\n```\n\nLet's take the width and size of the font as an example.\n\n```html\n
\n
\n
Text paragraph
\n
\n
\n```\n\n```css\n.w-400px {\n width: 400px;\n}\n\n.w-50p {\n width: 50%;\n}\n\n.size-50px {\n font-size: 50px;\n}\n\n.size-70p {\n font-size: 70%;\n}\n```\n\n\n See the Pen \n css_content_course_units_percent by Hexlet (@hexlet)\n on CodePen.\n\n\nWhat's going on here? Let's break it down step by step:\n\n* The main parent `
` is sized in absolute units. The width is 400 pixels and the font size is 50 pixels\n* The nested `
` has a size of 50%. This size is relative and is calculated relative to the nearest parent. This parent has a size of 400 pixels. Therefore, the block size will be 200 pixels\n* A paragraph of text has a font size of 70%. The closest parent with a set font size is `
`. The paragraph will be set to a font size of 70% of 50 pixels. I.e., 35px\n\nAn interesting example is setting percentages for a tag or class that involves nesting. Take a look at the following example:\n\n```html\n
\n
Item 1\n
\n
Item 1.1
\n
Item 1.2\n
\n
Item 1.2.1
\n
Item 1.2.2
\n
\n
\n
\n
\n
Item 2
\n
Item 3
\n
Item 4
\n
\n```\n\n```css\n.size-30px {\n font-size: 30px;\n}\n\nli {\n font-size: 70%;\n}\n```\n\nBefore you go any further, try to analyze this markup and calculate what font sizes each list item will have. Don't worry if you get confused. It can be tricky.\n\nHave you thought about it? Well done! Now let's see what it looks like:\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_units_percent_2 by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\nLet's analyze the result:\n\n* The font size of the first `
` element is 30 pixels\n* All `
` elements have a font size of 70%. This means that the deeper the list is nested, the smaller the font size:\n * Items 1, 2, 3, and 4 will have a size of 21 pixels\n * Items 1.1 and 1.2 are inside _Item 1_. The font size of this element is 21 pixels. This follows from the last point. Now the font size is counted from precisely 21 pixels\n * Items 1.1 and 1.2 will have a size of 14.7 pixels\n * Items 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 are nested within _Item 1.2_. The font size of this item is 14.7 pixels. This follows from the last point\n * Items 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 will have a font size of 10.29 pixels\n\n## Relative units calculated from the font size\n\nNow you can breathe, the hardest part is over. If you've studied percentages carefully, then the other relative units won't cause any difficulty. Two basic relative units of measure depend on the size of the font: _em_ and _rem_.\n\nThe value of _em_ is very similar to the use of percent. It shows _how much larger_ the size will be than the closest calculated `font-size` value. If you replace _70%_ with _0.7em_ in the last example with lists, the result will be the same.\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_units_em by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\nSo, what's the point of _em_? This unit of measure can be used not only for the font but also for any other properties that take a numerical value. For example, in the following code, the bottom margin will be 60px:\n\n```css\nsection {\n font-size: 30px;\n}\n\nsection p {\n margin-bottom: 2em;\n}\n```\n\nBut if a paragraph has its own `font-size` value, then the _em_ unit will be calculated from that. This is where the meaning of the phrase \"than the nearest calculated `font-size` value\" is calculated.\n\nThe second such unit is _rem_. The way it works is exactly the same as _em_. But there is one huge difference: the _rem_ is counted from the font size of the _root element_. The root element is `
`. It's the font size of this element that's taken into account when calculating the _rem_ unit.\n\nLet's go back to the example with the list. Replacing _em_ with _rem_ gives a completely different result. _0.7rem_ is calculated from the same place, but without taking nesting into account. In total, each element will have a font size of _11.2px_. This is due to the standard font size of 16 pixels in most browsers.\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_units_rem by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\nYou will notice that the `
` element having 30px text plays no role in this case.\n\n## Relative units calculated from screen size\n\nCSS allows you to set the dimensions relative to the current _viewport_ size, that being the size of the browser window that is accessible without scrolling. The basic two units are _vw_ (_viewport_ width) and _vh_ (_viewport_ height). You can think of it as a percentage of the _viewport_ size.\n\nThese units are often used to create a section for the entire available area of the browser.\n\n```html\n

\n```\n\n```css\nbody {\n margin: 0;\n padding: 0;\n}\n\n.one-screen-section {\n width: 100vw;\n height: 100vh;\n\n background: #80deea;\n}\n```\n\n\n See the Pen css_content_course_units_vh_vw by Hexlet\n (@hexlet) on CodePen.\n\n\nTry resizing the browser window using the CodePen example. Whatever browser width you set, the size of the section will automatically change. Consequently, there'll be no opportunity to scroll either horizontally or vertically.\n"},"lessonMember":null,"courseMember":null,"course":{"start_lesson":{"exercise":null,"units":[{"id":5562,"name":"theory","url":"/courses/css-content/lessons/intro/theory_unit"}],"links":[],"ordered_units":[{"id":5562,"name":"theory","url":"/courses/css-content/lessons/intro/theory_unit"}],"id":2465,"slug":"intro","state":"approved","name":"Intro","course_order":50,"goal":"Learn about the course topics and goals. Behind all the beautiful animations, panels, and images is all sorts of hidden content. The content is what the user comes to a website or opens an app for. The user's mood often depends on how good the content looks and feels.\n\nIn this course, we'll go through the fundamentals of working with content and how to make animations. You'll learn:\n\n* how to create styles for fonts and lists\n* how to create and style tables\n* how to use columns using the `columns` property\n* about the different units of measurement and how to work with them\n* how to create forms and use media elements\n* the basic rules of animation and typography\n* how to make content accessible\n\n## Practice\n\nMany of the lessons in this course will include a practice section with a web view. It's a good idea to do more than just complete the task. Once you've completed the task successfully, try experimenting with the code and the features you've learned.\n\nPractice segments in this course are built around a system of snapshot testing. Unlike other courses, this one doesn't check against the values you specify, but rather takes a screenshot of the page with your styles and compares it to the screenshots from the teacher's solution. You can easily see how the page should look at different _viewport_ resolutions.\n\nYou can see screenshots with styles from the teacher's solution in \\_\\_tests__/__image_snapshots\\_\\_.\n\n## Testing the solution\n\nStudents' solutions are mostly tested using the _Visual Regression Testing_ method, i.e., by _comparing screenshots_. Without going into technical details, the test is as follows:\n\n1. The exercise contains reference screenshots that were taken based on the teacher's solution\n2. When you click on the \"Check\" button, the student's solution is sent to a Chromium-based browser and screenshotted\n3. The screenshot is compared with the reference screenshot, and then the tests give a text result of the comparison\n\nIf there's a difference of more than 2% detected, the system will produce one of two possible errors:\n\n### Different sizes of screenshots\n\n\n\nThe system says that the dimensions of the images do not match. In this example, the reference screenshot is `370px x 558px`, and the comparison screenshot is `370px x 524px`.\n\nMost likely, there is a problem with the indentation/height or line spacing. Carefully analyze the screenshots, in the `__diff_output__` directory. The specific path is given in the test output, and the files can be found in the left area of the exercise.\n\nYou'll find two files:\n\n* _name-test-actual.jpg_ – the screenshot of your solution\n* _name-test-expected.jpg_ – the reference screenshot\n\n### Visual Differences\n\n\n\nIn this test, the system is reporting that the images have an 810-pixel difference. In this case, three files are generated instead of two:\n\n* _name-test-actual.jpg_ – the screenshot of your solution\n* _name-test-expected.jpg_ – the reference screenshot\n* _name-test-diff.jpg_ - the screenshot obtained by overlaying the student's screenshot and the reference screenshot. This is how you see the areas that are different\n\nThe screenshot with the differences looks something like this:\n\n\n\nThe places where the differences were found are highlighted in red. In this case, you can compare the screenshots yourself.\n\n---\n\n**Important**: fix the differences going from top to bottom. Often there is a situation where a small error in the indentation affects the entire screenshot. It looks like everything is wrong, but only one property needs to be fixed\n\n---\n\n### CodePen\n\nAnother opportunity to apply the skills learned in the course is to use the [CodePen](https://codepen.io) service. You can create your own pen, where you can experiment with properties.\n\nAdditionally, there'll be examples that are loaded from **CodePen** in each lesson of the course. They're available for review, and you can make edits in real-time and monitor the result. Don't miss out on this opportunity.\n\nDon't forget to practice all the time, that way you boost your content markup skills and be able to quickly and skillfully design all the content on a page or app.\n"},"id":262,"slug":"css-content","challenges_count":4,"name":"Content layout fundamentals","allow_indexing":true,"state":"approved","course_state":"finished","pricing_type":"paid","description":"The course focuses on working with content using CSS and HTML. You may notice that you should specify
20px
somewhere and that this value is fixed.

It's worth listing them, but chances are you'll never use them.

cm - centimeters

mm - millimeters

Q - quarter millimeters

in - inches

pc - picas, a typographic term

pt - point

Note that among these units are some you know from real life. This can be useful when setting up a print layout.

Relative units

This will be the most confusing part of the lesson. Relative units take their value from other values. The most versatile of these units are percentages. They always take their values from the closest parent element. The remaining units can be divided into two groups:

Relative units calculated from the font size

Relative units calculated from the screen size.

What's going on here? Let's break it down step by step:

The main parent

is sized in absolute units. The width is 400 pixels and the font size is 50 pixels

The nested

has a size of 50%. This size is relative and is calculated relative to the nearest parent. This parent has a size of 400 pixels. Therefore, the block size will be 200 pixels

A paragraph of text has a font size of 70%. The closest parent with a set font size is

. The paragraph will be set to a font size of 70% of 50 pixels. I.e., 35px

An interesting example is setting percentages for a tag or class that involves nesting. Take a look at the following example:

Let's analyze the result:

The font size of the first

element is 30 pixels

This means that the deeper the list is nested, the smaller the font size:

Items 1, 2, 3, and 4 will have a size of 21 pixels

Items 1.1 and 1.2 are inside Item 1. The font size of this element is 21 pixels. This follows from the last point. Now the font size is counted from precisely 21 pixels

Items 1.1 and 1.2 will have a size of 14.7 pixels

Items 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 are nested within Item 1.2. The font size of this item is 14.7 pixels. This follows from the last point

Items 1.2.1 and 1.2.2 will have a font size of 10.29 pixels

Relative units calculated from the font size

Now you can breathe, the hardest part is over. If you've studied percentages carefully, then the other relative units won't cause any difficulty. Two basic relative units of measure depend on the size of the font: em and rem.

The value of em is very similar to the use of percent. It shows how much larger the size will be than the closest calculated
font-size
value. If you replace 70% with 0.7em in the last example with lists, the result will be the same.

So, what's the point of em? This unit of measure can be used not only for the font but also for any other properties that take a numerical value. For example, in the following code, the bottom margin will be 60px:

section {

margin-bottom: 2em;
}

Expand code

But if a paragraph has its own
font-size
value, then the em unit will be calculated from that. This is where the meaning of the phrase "than the nearest calculated
font-size
value" is calculated.
