Think about it this way: If you could have 100 customers buy something from you once, or you could have 10 customers buy the same product from your brand every month for the rest of their lives, what would you choose? The latter, most likely.

While it’s probably not breaking news to you that it’s ideal for your customers to buy more than once, the tricky part is figuring out which strategies will encourage shoppers to come back. And if you sell consumables that people can find at their local shop, how do you keep them coming back to your online store every time they need a refill?

To combat the customer retention challenge, many brands have discovered that setting up a subscription or a membership allows them to guarantee regular repeat purchases.

But setting up this type of business model isn’t always feasible for every business since there are often higher operational costs and it can be more complex to manage.

Additionally, not all consumers want to commit to recurring payments and auto-replenishments, so brands that either don’t offer subscription services or operate according to both a subscription and non-subscription model need a different way to influence repeat purchases.

In a perfect world, you’d have psychic powers that allowed you to know exactly when your customers were running out of a product so you could follow up, but that’s not exactly realistic.

Instead, a cross-sell or upsell email automation might be a better option.

Ideally, yes, but your competitors are bombarding your customers with incentives and alternatives to your product on a daily basis. Perhaps your customer loves your coffee, but they’ve just been hit with an enticing ad that’s offering them 10 percent off to try a new brand.

Not to mention, if your customer does run out of your product before placing a new order with your brand, they may seek out a quicker way to get what they need. Maybe that means stopping by the convenience store down the street or taking advantage of a service that provides same-day shipping. Either way, it means you risk losing out on a potential sale.

With a replenishment email, you can reach your customers before they even have a chance to consider other options.

Build a product-based replenishment email

Once you decide that a replenishment email is a good fit for your brand and customers, building one is fairly simple. And once you set your automation and email content up, you can just let it do all the work when it comes to getting customers back to your site.

Let me walk you through how you can build a replenishment email automation, otherwise known as a flow, in Klaviyo.

Start by navigating to the Placed Order event in your account. If you want to make your flow unique to a certain product, add a trigger filter so that once a shopper purchases that product, they trigger the sequence of emails that will follow. Since this automation is based on your shopper’s purchase history for a certain product, it’s known as a product-based flow.

For product-based replenishment flows, ensure your email only goes to customers who haven’t purchased the product since they first entered the flow in order to ensure they haven’t already restocked the product by themselves. You can do this by adding a flow filter.

Product-based flows are ideal for brands that sell CPGs, including brands that have many SKUs that aren’t all consumable products or brands that have a variety of consumable products with different buying cycles. For example, if you run a cosmetics brand, the time it takes a customer to run out of foundation might be longer than the time it takes them to run out of mascara.

Additionally, if you only offer one product or if you mainly promote a hero product, product-based replenishment emails are the perfect solution to encourage repeat purchases.

Make your emails timely and relevant to the audience

For replenishment emails, timing is everything. If you send the email too soon, you could end up encouraging customers to repurchase your product well before they need it. But if you’re too late, you risk losing relevancy and your customer may have already found an alternative.

If your product has a set and established buying cycle, set a time delay based on how long it takes your customers to consume your product. For example, if you sell a vitamin or health supplement that has a 30-day supply, set the time delay between 20 and 25 days to give customers enough time to place a new order and receive it before they run out of their supply.

For other products, though, it’s not as easy to know how quickly your customers will use them, and it might differ from person to person. For example, a 24-pack of seltzer could take one person four weeks to drink, while another person might finish it over the span of four months.

That’s where predictive analytics comes into play. If you have enough customer data, you can use the predictive model of Average Time Between Orders to inform your replenishment email time delays.

For example, if you set up a marketing strategy for the same seltzer brand above and found the average customer went through a 24-pack in 10 weeks, you could use this information to set the time delay on your replenishment email for nine weeks.

Keep in mind, this data may change as your customers’ behavior evolves, so continue to check this estimate to keep your replenishment emails as timely as possible.

To hyper-target your customers, you can also use their expected data of the next order in the Repeat Purchase Nurture Series (found in the Flow Library of most automation platforms) to prompt them to buy based on their previous purchase behavior.

Similar to an abandoned cart email, you typically keep your replenishment email focused on the product, but in this case, the focus is on the item you’re convincing them to restock. Additionally, simple copy, product imagery and details, and a clear call-to-action (CTA) go a long way.

But that doesn’t mean the content has to be boring; you can follow the lead of these three direct-to-consumer (DTC) brands to create a replenishment email that’s engaging and unique to your business.
